XQuery Engines, Processors, Providers

Why did the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) decide we need yet another query language? Computer query languages have existed for years. SQL, the most popular language for querying databases, has been an international standard for two decades. There is, however, a distinction between data processing and document processing. HTML and XML made us aware of the need to query and update documents. The W3C XML Query Working Group developed a language (XQuery) that enables us to locate text in documents and traverse through a document’s structure. There have been dozens of XQuery implementations (view list).

There are XQuery processors embedded in database software for querying documents in relational or native XML databases. There are standalone or embeddable XQuery engines that can query files and message content. There are open source XQuery processors and commercial XQuery products. XQuery processors are available for several programming languages, including C++ and Java. The XQuery API for Java is in development through the Java Community Process as JSR-225.

This is an eclectic list. Some XQuery engines listed here are embeddable in applications. Others are part of a suite of software that includes an XQuery tool. Some entries in the table are database managers that support XQuery.
